Laetetia’s Migration Story

More than a decade ago, Laetetia arrived in New Zealand with big dreams and a confident mindset, certain that her experience in the financial and service industries in South Africa, along with her qualifications, would readily open doors for her. Laetetia imagined it would take no time at all to secure a role and begin building the life she envisioned.
But reality was far different. For 18 long months, she faced rejection after rejection. Despite submitting countless applications, she wasn’t even invited for interviews for 99% of her applications. Every “no” felt like a weight on her shoulders, and her confidence began to crumble.
She then learnt about the concept of the “Tall Poppy,” a term that she had never heard before, and quickly realised that the very qualities she once saw as strengths—her drive, her ambition, her background, her achievements – were now perceived as obstacles. The disheartenment set in, and with it came a wave of self-doubt. She questioned her worth. She even wondered if she was “goodenough”.
She began to feel inadequate, as though she had failed. She left her home in South Africa with the promise of a better life, and yet, here she was, struggling to make ends meet. The pressure of not living up to her own expectations, let alone those of the people she cared about, was overwhelming. She questioned whether she had made the right decision to come to New Zealand at all.
